The impact the advance of technology has had on our every day is undeniable. It is, of course, debatable, whether this impact has been all for the best or has more negative effects.

This debate can be extended to the field of chess, where most (if not all) of a chess player’s work is facilitated by computers and powerful engines.

The fight starts right from the beginning, where players try to find even the tiniest of advantages from the opening and look for novelties… and how else to do so than with the help of chess engines?​​​​​​​

The latest “shock” was given to the chess world by the now famous AlphaZero, who completely swiped off Stockfish 8. But the greatest surprise was not this, but the fact that it is said to be a self-taught computer system.

It has only been shown how the pieces move and it went on to learn everything else by itself – it had to “invent” the chess theory and further choose the best systems to be played. It played games against itself and learned from its mistakes, to develop into a strong chess force with a somewhat human-like approach to the game.

Making the Most of the Development Advantage

Since we begin in chess, one of our first and most important lessons is how to evaluate a position with maximum accuracy.
This aspect is so important because in most cases a correct or incorrect evaluation of the position will determine the course of our moves and plans. In order to assess a position we are given a list and we take certain aspects into consideration.
For example,king safety, pawn structure, material count, piece coordination or piece activity, space advantage, bishop pair, weaknesses on each side. These aspects help us understand what’s happening in our games and therefore they serve as a guide to make the best moves.
Some advantages are volatile and some are static.

This means that sometimes we have a permanent type of advantage that we can rely on the entire game, for example, our opponent has weak pawn structure.
Sometimes our advantage is volatile, meaning that it can evaporate easily if we don’t use it.
This is the case of the development advantage.
This sort of favorable situation can be reversed if we don’t play with energy and cash out into another type of advantage that will last longer and have a major impact on the position.

This is certainly a complicated matter and it’s probably up to the organizers to set up the rules they want if they want to change this, although we think nothing much can be done. In this article we want to add our share to the conversation and give our readers some advice regarding draw offers.

First of all, let’s start with the draws at the highest level. There is no shame in a played out tie. Draws are a normal result. The more both players know, the highest the probability that the game ends in a draw. In fact it should not be other way. Chess is a game where if you don’t make many mistakes, you shouldn’t lose.
